Starting Your First Aquarium in Qatar
Qatar presents unique challenges for aquarium keeping — high ambient temperatures, hard tap water, and dust from AC systems all affect your tank. The good news: once you understand these factors, maintaining a beautiful aquarium in Doha is very manageable.
PetAura supplies aquariums, equipment and fish in Qatar, with same-day delivery across Doha.
Choosing Your First Tank
Don't start too small. The most common beginner mistake is buying a tiny tank thinking it will be easier to manage. The opposite is true — small tanks swing in temperature and water chemistry much faster, making them harder to keep stable. For a first aquarium, 60–100 litres is the sweet spot.
Consider Qatar's temperatures. Your tank will likely not need a heater in Qatar's summer — ambient room temperatures (even with AC) often keep freshwater tanks in the tropical fish range of 24–28°C. In fact, cooling can be a bigger concern than heating in summer. Factor this in when choosing fish.
Essential Equipment
Filter — non-negotiable. Size your filter for at least double your tank volume per hour. A 100-litre tank needs a filter rated for 200+ litres per hour.
Heater (winter only) — Qatar's winter nights can drop enough to stress tropical fish. A small heater set to 26°C protects them during the cooler months (November–February).
Thermometer — check temperature daily when starting out. Digital stick-on thermometers are accurate enough.
Lighting — LED lighting is best for Qatar — lower heat output than older fluorescent systems, which matter when you're already fighting ambient heat.
Water conditioner — Qatar's tap water is chlorinated and often has chloramine. Always treat tap water with conditioner before adding it to the tank.
The Nitrogen Cycle — The Most Important Thing to Understand
Before adding fish, your tank needs to cycle — this is the process of establishing beneficial bacteria that convert toxic ammonia (from fish waste) into nitrite, then into much less harmful nitrate.
Cycling takes 4–6 weeks with fish, or 2–3 weeks with a fishless cycle using ammonia drops. Skipping this step kills fish. It's the number one reason beginners lose their first fish.
Signs your tank is cycled: ammonia reads 0, nitrite reads 0, nitrate reads above 0 on a test kit.
Best Starter Fish for Qatar Beginners
Choose hardy fish that tolerate Qatar's temperature fluctuations:
Avoid delicate species (discus, saltwater fish) for your first tank — learn the basics first.
Water Changes in Qatar
Change 20–25% of your tank water weekly. Qatar's tap water is hard (high mineral content) — this suits many fish but can be an issue for species that prefer soft water. If you want to keep soft-water species, consider using a reverse osmosis filter or mixing tap with RO water.
