Choosing a Bird Cage in Qatar

The right cage is the single most important purchase you'll make for your bird. Too small and your bird develops behavioural problems. Wrong bar spacing and it's a safety hazard. Poor materials and it degrades quickly in Qatar's heat and humidity.

PetAura supplies bird cages across Qatar with same-day delivery in Doha.

The Most Important Rule — Bigger Is Always Better

Birds need space to move, stretch their wings, climb and play. The minimum cage size is one where the bird can fully extend both wings without touching the sides. That's the absolute minimum — in practice, go larger.

By bird type:

  • Budgerigar / Parakeet — minimum 45cm wide × 45cm deep × 60cm tall. Wider is better than taller — budgies fly horizontally, not vertically.

  • Cockatiel — minimum 60cm × 60cm × 90cm

  • African Grey / Amazon / Large Parrots — minimum 90cm × 90cm × 120cm. Larger if you can accommodate it.

  • Canary / Finch — long rectangular cages work best — these birds fly back and forth more than they climb
  • Bar Spacing — A Safety Critical Decision

Wrong bar spacing is dangerous. Too wide and your bird can get its head stuck. Too narrow and it can trap toes.

  • Small birds (budgies, canaries, finches): 1–1.5cm bar spacing

  • Medium birds (cockatiels, conures): 1.5–2cm

  • Large parrots: 2–3cm
  • Never guess — measure the bar spacing before buying if the product listing doesn't specify it.

    Materials in Qatar's Climate

Qatar's heat, dust and humidity affect cage materials. What to look for:

Powder-coated steel — the best all-round choice. Durable, easy to clean, safe if the coating is non-toxic. Check that the coating is lead-free and zinc-free — these are toxic to birds if chewed.

Stainless steel — the premium option. Completely non-toxic, doesn't rust, lasts a lifetime. More expensive but worth it for larger parrots that chew everything.

Avoid: Galvanised wire (zinc poisoning risk), painted cages with unknown paint composition, plastic-heavy construction (birds chew it and ingest it).

    Placement in Your Qatar Home

Avoid direct sunlight — Qatar's sun through a window can heat a cage to dangerous temperatures within minutes. Birds are more sensitive to heat than most owners realise.

Near family activity, not isolated — birds are social. A cage in a quiet corner leads to loneliness and feather-plucking. Somewhere the bird can see and hear the household is better.

Away from the kitchen — non-stick cookware (PTFE/Teflon) releases fumes when overheated that are lethal to birds. This is a well-documented risk. Keep birds out of kitchens.

Stable temperature — not directly under an AC vent (cold drafts cause respiratory illness) but in a room with consistent temperature.

    Accessories Your Cage Needs

A cage alone isn't enough. Your bird needs:

  • Perches of varying diameter — different thicknesses exercise the feet and prevent pressure sores. Natural wood perches are better than uniform dowel.

  • Foraging toys — birds need mental stimulation. A bored bird screams and plucks.

  • Food and water bowls — stainless steel or ceramic, not plastic. Replace water twice daily in Qatar's heat.

  • Cage cover — birds need 10–12 hours of sleep. A cover for night helps regulate their sleep cycle.
